Police have been lambasted for dispatching five officers to Burna Boy

The HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA, HURIWA, has filed a complaint with the Lagos State Police Command and the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, for deploying five police operatives to guard a musician, Burna Boy.

According to the rights group, this type of deployment, which is completely out of the ordinary, has become the standard in Nigeria’s police force.

According to the rights group, this explains why there are no preventative actions taken in times of crisis because the few operatives are all deployed for private commercial operations by their Area Commanders and Commissioners, with the Inspector-General’s agreement.

Burna Boy’s police bodyguards shot at a guy in a Lagos nightclub after the artist allegedly made advances toward the man’s wife, according to HURIWA.

The five officers assigned to the singer have been detained by the Lagos State Police Commissioner’s Special Squad for attempted murder.

On Wednesday, June 8, 2022, one of the police officers is claimed to have fired a shot at two revelers, Irebami Lawrence and Tolu, at Club Cubana on Victoria Island, Lagos.

Burna Boy and his five police escorts entered the nightclub at 4:00 a.m. on June 8, according to a preliminary report by the Bar Beach Police Division.

While four police officers waited outside, one of them, Inspector Ibrahim, who was dressed in mufti, escorted the Grammy-winning performer into the club. The musician was apparently in the VIP section with three women when he noticed another woman.

The lady’s husband, on the other hand, was alleged to have slammed the artist, claiming that any guy making overtures at his wife was disrespectful.

Burna Boy reportedly made new passes at the woman after a few minutes. This upset her spouse even more, as did his buddies at the club.

“As things heated up, Ibrahim pulled out his service weapon and fired multiple shots while Burna Boy laughed,” a senior cop stated.

According to HURIWA, 27-year-old Lawrence was wounded in the thigh during the procedure, while his companion, Tolu, was hit in the head by a bullet, causing a ruckus in the club.

Burna Boy and his entourage then drove to one of his houses around the Elegushi end of the Lekki-Epe Expressway before heading to Lekki Phase 1 according to reports.

Burna Boy, who was well aware of what he had done, boarded the next flight without even telling the cops. He only communicated with them via video conference to inform them that he had traveled to Spain.

HURIWA held the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, to a higher level of culpability, accusing him of allowing five entire police officers to go on such an illegal mission.

The group demanded that President Muhammadu Buhari unbundle the Police Service Body and remove the Chairman, claiming that the Chairman has shown great ineptitude and a refusal to lead the commission.

It also urged the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to prosecute Burna Boy and his killer police squad, demonstrating that no one is above the law in a democracy.
